CEREBROTONIAâNERVOUS SYSTEM DOMINANCE
Ectomorphy is that quality which gives to the physique fragility, linearity, flatness of chest, delicacy in general. The body of the high endormorph is oval, with the greatest mass in the midsection; that of the high mesomorph, triangular, with the greatest breadth across the shoulders; that of the high ectomorph, linear, with not much breadth anywhere. Such people have slender, poorly muscled limbs and delicate, pipestem bones. They lack padding and their nervous systems are overexposed.
Cerebrotonia is that quality of temperament which usually goes with a physique high in ectomorphy. In viscerotonia the temperament centers in the gut; in somatotonia, in the muscles; in cerebrotonia, in the nervous system. Cerebrotonia is a major characteristic of what Carl Jung called âintroversionâ just as somatotonia and viscerotonia are characteristics of âextroversion.â âThe cerebrotonic finds both his delights and his defenses in the system and detail of his own consciousness.â62
Because the high cerebrotonic is so preoccupied with his own consciousness it might be thought that he, more than most people, would show an interest in the theory and the practice of Creative Psychology. As far as theory is concerned, this is quite true. People high in cerebrotonia are often âseekers,â and have a tendency to read numerous books on occultism, mysticism, theosophy and the like. But the high cerebrotonic has a tendency always to âmentalizeâ this material. More than any other type, he tends to lose himself in dreams. âThe major cerebrotonic danger is dissociation from reality. The freedom of the forebrain is likely to be purchased at the price of a biological losing of the way, and hence at an apparent end-cost of suicide.â62
High cerebrotonia confronts its possessor with a formidable array of essence obstacles and essence limitations which he must somehow learn to overcome or to live with. These arise out of the following cerebrotonic traits:
Physiological overresponsiveness. This trait is undoubtedly the curse of cerebrotonia. The high cerebrotonic overreacts to practically everything. Both his central nervous system, over which he has direct control, and his autonomic nervous system, over which he has none, are set too finely, on hair triggers so to speak. The digestive tract in such people is thrown into turmoil by even slight emotional stimulation. Nausea, indigestion, migraine headaches, heart palpitations can all be induced by situations which would leave the more placid viscerotonic unperturbed. The skin is frequently sensitive and responds with inflammation to nervous as well as physical irritation.
Whereas the viscerotonic must learn to press the start button to prevent himself from lapsing into a state of vegetative torpor, the cerebrotonic must learn to press the stop button, to slow his jumpy reactions, to calm down his too active digestive system, to relax his tense muscles, especially those of the face. Such people live at all times dangerously near to the point of exhaustion. They lose energy through excessive muscular tension. Their too finely set start system presses the panic button when there is no need for such emergency measures, flooding their systems with adrenalin and leaving them subsequently exhausted.
